out with February… in with March…

Happy Sunday, and happy March, Reader! It’s time to look back on last month and see what I did(n’t) get around to… I would like to start off by saying that I think I did better in February than I did in January… But of course, I’m biased, as it’s my opinion about myself…

So let’s be quick and get down to business.

1. Read a book a week over the perfect four-week month.

I did this! I started reading a couple of books listed on my PopSugar List and according to the Goodreads Challenge thingy, I’m right on schedule for reading 50 books by the end of the year.

2. Go to that damn book club meeting that I missed last month.

I went and I had a great time! You can read about it here.

3. Run 30 miles. Seriously this time. Pay the neighborhood gym fee that makes me want to slit my wrists it’s so high if it comes to that. Get up off your fat ass, Kristine Teacher.

Grand mileage total last month: 8.64 miles. I even paid for that little gym… I haven’t been motivated at all and without something to work toward, I just let my laziness persist.

4. Do SOMETHING, possibly GO SOMEWHERE, for “Seollal,” the Lunar New Year. I have a five day break from school and there’s just no excuse not to use this time to see something new.

I went overnight to Gyeongju, a famous historical town here in Korea. Gyeongju was the capital city during the Silla dynasty and is rich with history. KBFF and I went with our other Korean friend. A fun time was had by all. (Except for when KBFF was practically force-feeding me Korean food. I ate a tiny crab. See photo above…)

Well, there you have it. I didn’t do great on the running front, but everything else went pretty well. So now, let’s talk about what the “intentions” are for March. Because that’s what you really want to know, isn’t it?

1. Eat “Paleo” for the entire month. (March Intention)

Okay, so I totally blew this today because I forgot that this was my goal for the month. So, with that being said, starting tomorrow, Paleo is the name of the game. And I expect it to suck. A lot. But I’ll get over it.  

2. (Yes, I’m doing it again…) Run 30 miles.

I signed up this weekend for a 10K the first weekend in April and I’ve got to get ready for it. This time, I feel like I’ll be likely to actually try and achieve this one.

3. Pay off the remaining $1000 on a credit card that I’ve been carrying a balance on since 2010.

This is a big deal, Reader. I’m finally getting smart and paying off the credit cards I came here to pay off… As much as it pains me to have less of a disposable income, obviously being debt free is more important. This is definitely going to happen in a few days.

4. Read 5 books this month from the PopSugar challenge.

Self-explanatory. I’ll also have an “assigned” book for the book club, which won’t count in this total So if we’re going to get really technical, I should probably aim for 6 books… That’s a lot.

5. Watch the new “House of Cards” season. 

Need I say more? The new HOC season came out over the weekend and I need to see it. Because, duh. Not to ruin it if you’re not up to speed, but Frank Underwood pulled some crazy sh*t in season 2 and things are sure to be even crazier in season 3.

And there you have it, Reader. Last month’s achievements/fails and this month’s intentions. It’s going to be a good month.

I should be working but I’m not… well, sort of…

It’s Monday, Reader, and I’m starting to write this post from work. Yes, there are things I should/could be doing, but I’m not doing them. My excuse? Well, I have a few, really.

First of all, I’m busy thinking about/planning for/altogether distracted by my newest project undertaking: completing some Reading Challenges.

Secondly, this week is a major holiday by Asian standards: it is the Lunar New Year (설날). As such, I will work today and tomorrow, but not Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. (Hurrah for me!) This also means that my regular work load, which would normally include about 50-70 notebooks written by my students, will be exceptionally lighter. Those notebooks will remain in my students’ grubby little hands until next week when I can grade and actually return them at the end of the week. So, I’ve got some extra time on my hands.

Thirdly, it’s effing Monday and I just don’t want to do anything. (I also didn’t make it to the gym this morning, but I did finish a book!) So, there. Those are my reasons. Call them excuses or whatever you want, but you know what? I’ve been working, just not on actual “teacher-y,” work-related things. I’ve been working on personal, reading, blog-related things. Which means you get to read about it and reap the benefits. Aren’t you excited about that, at least?!

going somewhere in february… and other intentions…

Happy Sunday, Reader! And welcome to February. FEBRUARY. We’re already a full month into the new year, and it never ceases to amaze me how much faster time seems to pass now that I’m a legit adult. Frankly, it’s a little bit scary.

But anyway. It’s time to bore you with yet another list of things I’m going to [somewhat pretend] to accomplish this month. If you haven’t picked up on this from reading over the last several months, I’m an obsessive list maker. It’s so bad, that I actually own two monthly planners (obviously, for separate things) and a desk calendar. Not to mention, I use my iCal, too. And a cool app called Taasky… And my Apple “Notes” app… And, recently, Evernote… Seriously. I have a problem.

Okay. Tangent. Sorry. Here’s my few monthly goals that are in addition to the “ongoing monthly” intentions I have. You can read more about those here.

1. Read a book a week over the perfect four-week month. (Plus one, for the book club. Better get busy, huh?) *February’s “Intention-a-Month”

2. Go to that damn book club meeting that I missed last month. I have high hopes because this month, we’re (I say “we’re” because it’s imperative that I include myself in the group to further encourage actually going and not just reading the book) reading Red Dragon  by Thomas Harris. Apparently, this is the first of the Hannibal Lector books. I do love a good dose of creepy.

Let’s see if I can keep it together this month. Last month wasn’t so hot, should you have chosen to read yesterday. But I am feeling better after getting over that nasty cough and I’ve got big expectations for this second month of 2015.

So that’s it. Short and sweet. Wish me luck, Reader, because I’m obviously going to need it if we’re going based on last month’s track record. Yep. Whatevs.

it’s a wrap… the truth about January intentions…

I’ve been looking forward to this post (and also dreading it) for more than a week now. Want to know why I wasn’t so excited about it? Because I knew I had blown my chances at checking more than a few things off my list for this month, which kills me. But only a little bit. At some point, I suppose I got comfortable missing goals and stopped beating myself up about not making it to the proverbial end on the highest of notes. (We’ve talked about this before…)

And honestly, I can’t decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing…

But anyway, let’s go back through the list, piece by piece, and blurb a little bit about each one. Sorry if this bores you, but I figure it’s good for me because maybe I’ll be more motivated once February starts tomorrow… Well. I mean, here’s hoping, anyway.

1. Bake a cheesecake from scratch.

Oops. I mostly blame this not happening on not having all the necessary supplies. On the day when I made a special trip to a department store to obtain said special supplies, said department store didn’t have what I needed. I then proceeded to not make an additional trip to another store where I presumably could have found what I wanted. Whatever. Maybe I should revisit this when cold desserts will be more appreciated.

2. Start investing in one woman’s business a month through Kiva.org. (The Life List – #13)

I did this! I started this project! Yay, me.

3. Write one letter a month to someone meaningful in my life and mail it to them.

Did this one, too, and was pretty excited. Who did I choose for this month? My little sister, KSD. 

4. Take a photo every day of the year.

Reader, I totally blew it on this one. There were several days that went by where I didn’t take a photo… And I feel pretty guilty about it. (I really do feel stupid guilty about this one. Really.) Because, honestly, how hard is it to take a photo? REALLY? Not hard. But you know me, I’m a little bit of a disappointment.

and so it begins… yet again…

Happy new year, Reader!

I’m super excited for this new year. While I was excited (I think) for last year to begin, I can’t say I was quite this excited. 2014 was a great year for me for so many reasons. This year, though, feels like it’s going to be even better. And I don’t even know how that’s possible, but I think it just might be!

If you recall my post several days ago, you’ll remember that I laid down a list of new “intentions” for this year. Let me be frank: I don’t know if I’ll make it through all of them. BUT BUT BUT – I have good intentions to make them happen. So, now that we’re both a day (two for me!) into the new year, let’s lay out what needs to happen/things that need to start this month based on this list:

1. Bake a cheesecake from scratch. (Monthly Goal – January)

I’ve already been hunting on Pinterest to find a delectible recipe to use… My mouth has been watering. I’m thinking this needs to happen, like, this weekend or next… The sooner the better.

2. Start investing in one woman’s business a month through Kiva.org. (The Life List – #13)

I got on Kiva’s website the other day and started making a list of women that I wanted to begin helping and investing in. There are so many, but I really feel compelled to help women working alone, especially young women. I am super excited about this one.

3. Write one letter a month to someone meaningful in my life and mail it to them.

This was an idea my aunt gave to me in response to one of my earlier posts when I started making the 2015 intentions lists. I love it! I bought stationery yesterday to start the project off right.

4. Take a photo every day of the year.

I started yesterday! Most of these will make it to my Instagram account, which you can see along the right side of the blog… All of my daily photos, I’ve decided, I’ll post en masse at the end of each month. If you’d like to follow me on Instagram, look for shops4shoes!

5. Keep a jar of “memories” from good days throughout the year. At least one thing should go into the jar per week.

Still need to get the jar and some “pretty” paper to jot down my thoughts on. But I’ve got one good thing already that happened after the turn of the new year! Project in progress…

6. Blog at least eight times each month. Find a weekly “thing” to post.

Here’s one down, seven to go. Still trying to decide on that weekly “thing”… Posts this month I plan to bother you with include A) revisiting the “most Christmas-y classroom decorating,” B) getting “inked” for my birthday last year (from the Life List), and C) letting you know how that cheesecake comes out.

7. Try one new recipe a month that I probably pinned two years ago on Pinterest. Write about it.

Time to start scouring the Pinterest boards for something sufficiently “chicken-y” to make. Yum yum!

8. Start setting three to five monthly goals and post them on this blog the first day of every month.

These are to follow all the crap you’ve just finished reading.
